Patriotism, 2002. A non-political view
by Arthur Young

"Patriotism is not a short and frenzied outburst of emotion, but the
tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime." Adlai E. Stevenson, Jr.

"Patriotism speaks to love and devotion to ones country... It should be the kind of support that protects the "best" of our country and strives to make it greater.
Patriotism can manifest itself in many ways.
Patriotism also means ... and most importantly, living your life in a way that reflects a belief in our countries principals..."
Oz Nelson, Board of Directors, The National Museum of Patriotism

Flag-waving is not surprising in the aftermath of a full-scale attack on American civilians. As individuals, we are all (to some degree) traumatized. It is precisely during the most trying periods that recruiters, and employment professionals must distance themselves from their emotions if they are to do their best work.

Our 'best work' can be to invigorate our clients and candidates with confidence. Set a positive example. Elevate the ethics of our profession daily. Present and qualify candidates against results (they can achieve) vs. placing them to complete the project. Challenge hiring managers and candidates to take responsibility for improved results. "Wake-up the sleeping". "Expose those who are hiding".

Courage is necessary to help companies, hiring entities, and mangers whom are 'frozen'. Afraid, to hire. Perhaps they are convinced the next person hired will be a bigger problem than the last. Perhaps they do not believe their problems can be solved. Are they 'in retreat'?

Patriots will boldly consultant with clients and candidates, and will uncover 'their pain' and 'their promise', concentrate to find a solution that will impact results (real increase in productivity and revenue, reduced costs, etc).

Patriots protect their clients and candidates from thieves. Entities and individuals that are greedy will rob them and eventually cause negative ripple effects through our firms, communities and markets.

Recruiters have the 'inside skinny'. Recruiters and employment industry professionals can empower our country. Courage and Patriotism can be overt actions aimed positively at the corporations, institutions and individuals in America.
