John J.Brennan, The Vanguard Group

In 1999 John was acknowledged as the IACPR Outstanding Individual for his contribution in the development of talent and human resources management. John began to credit the success of The Vanguard Group, $580 billion in assets and 11,000 plus employee firm to it's people before it was fashionable. He has instilled the discipline to all of the staff that their top priority is providing exceptional performance and service to their clients. The 183 officers are evaluated on what they do for the client and for how well they develop the crew (their direct reports). They are thought of as internal clients. John goes to great length to recognize and reward those people who succeed because of their substance. John notes "many people at competing firms spend time jockeying for position, the people who are major contributors to Vanguard's success have focused their time and energy on serving our internal and external clients and on competing externally".
