This Week’s Question: Entrepreneur calls mission statements “a key tool that can be just as important as your business plan.” With that in mind, we turned to the members of BusinessCollective to ask: How did you craft your mission statement, and why does it matter to you and your company?

BusinessCollective is a virtual mentorship program powered by America’s most ambitious young thought leaders, entrepreneurs, executives and small business owners, including the members of FounderSociety.

JamieD1. Make It Inspirational

Mission statements define a business and address the reason behind it. Create one that you can reference when you’re having a bad day or a rough week, or when you feel like giving up. You’ll remember why you started in the first place, and get some much-needed motivation. Create a statement that will not only inspire others, but also inspire you!

Vivek2. Treat It as Your Raison D’etre

Our mission statement defines our philosophy for empowering healthy eating. It defines our position in the marketplace and how we create our product. For us, our mission statement is our raison d’etre. We forced ourselves to articulate the reason for what we do and created a mission statement that reflected that.

As obesity is a national crisis in the U.S., we decided to tackle this problem. Weight loss is an age-old problem whose solution changes every season with new diet types and workout styles. We think that with recent developments in data science, we are at a unique moment in history where a definitive solution to weight loss can be found using data. It’s what we’re all about and have focused our mission on it.

zac4. Find a Passion and Take Action

Our mission statement is our passion, which is creating meaningful content. The end goal of our organization is to help people get started with a blog of their own and to create new opportunities everyday. Not only is this our mission statement, it’s the steps we took to get to where we are today.
