This Week’s Question: Why did you choose entrepreneurship ?

The answers below are provided by members of FounderSociety, an invitation-only organization comprised of ambitious startup founders and business owners.

Adarsh1. I Was Born an Entrepreneur

I think one is born an entrepreneur. I always ask any aspiring entrepreneur, ‘What’s your tolerance for risk?’ To be successful, you have to really be willing to go all in without looking back. If you’re going to be an entrepreneur, do it fearlessly, give it all you have, and don’t take shortcuts.

I’ve started a couple different businesses, but it all stemmed from the fact that I disliked having to work for someone else and spending my days helping them build their dream. Why not take all that passion and effort and build something that I truly love? Not only that, but I’m also pretty opinionated, so it just seems to work better for me to run my own business.

By the time I was 26, I had lost three jobs. Once due to massive layoffs, once due to the company shutting down, and once due to poor performance. It was unfortunate at the time, but being fired from my last job was the best thing that ever happened to me. Being an entrepreneur is viewed as risky by many, but for me, it’s comforting. As an entrepreneur, I choose my own path — not someone else’s.

I was looking for independence at work and freedom to innovate. As an entrepreneur, I find it is easier to innovate as well as have control over my earning potential. I find it a fun challenge to optimize both my potential to innovate as well as earn a better living. It’s not easy, but it’s exciting.

I chose entrepreneurship because I love the idea of creating your own future and seeing your hard work pay off. It is very empowering to see the impact of your hard work and watch a company grow. I love having control over my career path. I also love the freedom that comes along with being an entrepreneur.

Julian6. I Was Unemployable

I never chose to be an entrepreneur, but I have grown to become one despite who I was. I realized early on that I make a terrible employee because I’m impatient to work for someone else’s dream. I am a great team player when I’m working on something I’m crazy passionate about. Otherwise, I would be a frustrating person to manage. Entrepreneurship suits my type of personality well.
