Pop quiz: How many companies in the FTSE 100 and the S&P 500 are led by women? Given the overall demographics of the UK and the US, it should be close to 50 percent – about 300 companies.

In reality, however, a scant 33 companies are led by women. That’s only 5.5 percent!

How do we account for such a disparity? There’s no short answer, but there are a lot of factors at work here, as demonstrated by a new infographic from Towergate Insurance. Check it out for a closer examination of gender equality – or the lack thereof – at the top of the corporate ladder:
