We’ve all heard about the importance of diversity when it comes to recruitment, but now the folks at InternMatch have created a report to detail what recruiters are doing with that knowledge. According to its InternMatch Diversity Report, 81 percent of companies plan to focus on recruiting diverse candidates, but unfortunately, just 13 percent of companies reported to currently having a diversity and inclusion manager to handle this initiative. The report also found that 36.7 percent of companies plan to reserve spots for diverse candidates in their internship program.
“The diversity report was created to show why diversity is important and the barriers to entry many organizations face when following-through with it. While there’s no one-size-fits-all approaching to recruiting, incorporating diversity into your recruitment strategies ensures you have a more well-rounded team,” Nathan Parcells, co-founder and CMO of InternMatch, said. “Diverse employees have varying experiences, learning styles, and success stories, all of which can contribute to the growth and success of an organization. Without this sort of development, many companies may stay stagnant or stuck in outdated practices.”
A few other key findings from the report include:
- 46.7 percent of Fortune 1000 companies use diversity career fairs, partnerships with diverse affinity groups, third-party recruitment agencies and niche job boards to source diverse hires
- More than half (56%) of startups will focus on recruiting more women in tech, while the majority of companies will focus on recruiting more minorities
- Recruiting budgets pose challenges as 37.5 percent of university recruiters consider budget the biggest challenge to their organization’s diversity goals
“A wide range of employees create stronger ideas, offer varying perspectives, and offer a multitude of skillsets,” Parcells said. “With competition as fierce as it is in the marketplace, you need to make sure your team can compete with your rivals, at home and abroad. Diverse teams can tackle this problem, while creating a competitive advantage, longevity, and a well-rounded team.”
