Medical sales reps face various challenges throughout their careers, many of which can result in dramatic cuts to their earnings. With so many variables at play, it’s important for medical sales reps to understand how their compensation can change from year to year.

Medical sales job board MedReps  surveyed 2,793 of its members to understand what factors cause base salaries, bonuses/commissions, and total compensation to increase and decrease in this industry. The results are both surprising and inspiring.

According to the survey, medical sales reps will earn slightly less this year in base salaries, but most will see an increase in total compensation due to higher bonus/commission earnings.

Here are a few key points from the survey:

– Capital equipment/durable medical equipment sales reps earn the highest average total compensation.
– Those who operate in the surgery/OR market segment generally earn lower base salaries but higher bonuses and total compensation packages.
– One average, women earn 81 cents for every dollar earned by men in medical sales.
– Reps who travel 50 percent of the time have the highest income potential.
