news“Hmmm… was I rejected because a star applicant got the job OR was I rejected because the employer discriminates against people like me?”  When opening that rejection email, this is often the thought process that buzzes past.  Certainly a long history of Jim Crow and other institutionalized policies of discrimination are specters that haunt employers and employees alike.

How can employers embrace employment practices that promote equality in the workplace ?  Employers will be held increasingly responsible in the new year, as new policies from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) take effect.  Under these initiatives of EEOC, employers’ hiring practices will be examined and held accountable under the court of law.

These new policies might make employers more aware of their hiring practices.  Concerned employers may wish to consider tuning in to a webcast on Tuesday, January 25 at 2 p.m. EST presented by the Labor and Employment Practice Group of Seyfarth Shaw, LLP.  During this presentation, Pamela Q. Devata will present information about EEOC’s initiative, best practices related to applicants’ credit information and criminal history, and hiring controversies due to social networking.
