The bar is continually raised; the features available only in expensive enterprise recruitment software last year are available in entry-level software today. It’s a healthy process that indicates that both the demand and market for recruiting software is robust and growing.

SmartRecruiters, a San Francisco based start-up, is attempting to accelerate this trend. The recent launch of SmartRecruiters promises to bring a new perspective to the marketplace – an entirely free applicant tracking system. The new recruiting software is not a cross-subsidy for a higher-level product nor is it based on a “freemium” business model. In much the same business model as that described in Chris Anderson’s “Free: The Future of a Radical Price,” SmartRecruiters is actually a fully featured, yet free, applicant tracking system and job posting technology.

Having founded and later sold MrTed Ltd (a widely used enterprise applicant tracking system), Jerome Ternynck is one of the real veterans of the recruiting tech space. “We’re committed to changing recruiting through innovation and access,” said Jerome. “For most businesses, recruiting today is lengthy, painful and expensive. Why are more than 4 million jobs left vacant, while 10% of the workforce is unemployed? That needs to change. Recruiting needs to change. We live in a connected world in which hiring should be easy — especially for small to medium businesses who are the backbone of our economy.”

Jerome and company believe a free applicant tracking system has wider implications for the broad employment marketplace. He and the company are also involved in a separate non-commercial effort which they call “Zero Unemployment,” which aims to reduce hiring inefficiencies in order to improve employment levels.
