Google Keeps On Hiring

In a speech at the Digital – Life – Design (DLD) conference, Eric Schmidt confirmed that Google will hire an additional 1,000 employees in Europe. Over the past few years, Google’s hiring has been rapid and aggressive across the globe. Recruitment at the company has become the stuff of legend, with aggressive packages given to lure employees away from rivals like Facebook.

Google recently held their number four spot on Fortune’s best places to work, so their new hiring initiative shouldn’t prove difficult. Google is famous for their laundry list of sweet employee perks, including a free gourmet cafeteria, free laundry service, and climbing walls and video games.

Technology hiring has been a bright spot in an overall dismal employment climate over the past couple of years. Hiring at top technology firms as well as startups has remained relatively strong throughout the recession. Financial regulations and massive banking projects have also contributed to strong demand for technology professionals such as software developers and project managers.

Google recently confirmed that Eric Schmidt will pass over the CEO reins to Google founder Larry Page. The recent call for more hiring in Europe signals that Larry Page will still be tasked with aggressive  development and global expansion. It will be interesting to watch how Larry Page steers the company through the next stage in its development as a mature, global company.
