6 Recruiters Share the Reasons Why They Entered the Industry

Today’s Question: What drew you to this industry? Why did you decide to make a career out of recruiting? What do you find fulfilling and rewarding about being a recruiter?
1. I Wanted to Help People
My journey in human resources was not the traditional path. Pursuing my passion to help people by completing a bachelor’s degree in psychology, I soon become plagued by a question most graduates face: What do I do with this degree?
While deciding how to connect my education with a career, I gained valuable experience working with an agency supporting various clients on different HR-related projects. It was after the completion of my master’s degree in business management that I decided to pursue a career in recruiting.
Connecting people with opportunities and building relationships with job seekers is what makes each day very rewarding – as do understanding the challenges that job seekers face when going through the recruitment process and being part of the moment when you get to say my favorite words to them: “We would like to offer you this opportunity.”

2. I Take Pride in Helping Companies Grow
The people we hire at Badger Maps are our most valued assets, and my job is to mine for diamonds. As recruiters, we require a unique skill set to be successful in the dynamic, fast-paced, and competitive software industry. Having an eye for talented and hard-working individuals is critical to our everyday activities, and as a social person, it was a great fit.
I took my first steps in recruiting at Badger Maps a year ago, and I take a lot of pride knowing that I can help a unique company grow in the most progressive fashion imaginable. 3. The Money Caught My Eye
The money is what attracted me and, for the most part, why I am still a recruiter. It takes a few years, but very quickly, you can out-earn your peers. There are also very few careers where you can set up your own company at 26 and grow that to have international offices within five years. My favorite part of the role is winning over a new client and really impressing them with our service.

4. I Wanted to Make a Difference
After graduating, I was looking for a career where I could work directly with a variety of individuals while also helping to make a difference in their lives. The most rewarding part of recruiting for me is having the opportunity to build genuine relationships with each person I work with beyond their first day.

5. I Loved the Challenges – and the Rewards
Initially, I was just looking for an internship to complete my master’s degree and HR was one of my options. After having a taste of what being a recruiter means, I decided to make a career out of it as I realized how challenged, stimulated, and motivated I felt every day. Each project is different, and you are lucky enough to be exposed to different types of industries and learn something new every time.
Besides, the most fulfilling aspect of doing my job is having the chance to make everybody happy! On one hand, you support company growth by recruiting talented people who, hopefully, will make the difference. On the other hand, you offer new job opportunities to candidates who are trying to make their lives more comfortable or need jobs that allow them to accomplish great things.
Of course, there are difficulties, stressful times, and setbacks – but the juice is definitely worth the squeeze!

6. It Just Kind of Happened – Sort Of
Interestingly, I’ve recruited recruiters, and when I ask this question, the reply is “I didn’t set out to be a recruiter – it just happened.” The same goes for me. Sort of.
I met someone who mentioned they were in talent acquisition, and at that time, I didn’t even know what that was. He explained, I listened, and I heard how he was making changes in the recruiting space. I was hooked! I called him twice a week for seven months straight until he gave me a chance. I was determined to be a part of something bigger than myself, and in doing so, this meant I could be helpful in changing people’s lives for the better. I wanted growth (personally and professionally), to make a difference, to connect with people, and ultimately, to understand where our world was shifting so I could gear my kids up for success.
Chad MacRae gave me that opportunity, and because of him, I went from recruiting coordinator to partner at Recruiting Social in four years! And I’d do it all over again!
