mobile phonesWANTED Analytics, provider of real-time business intelligence for the talent market, has reported that over 19,000 jobs for mobile developers were posted online in February; a rate of growth over 80 percent faster over the year. Additionally, hiring demand for the specialty field is up nearly 300 percent over 2010 and over 400 percent from 2009. The speedy pace is abetted by the newer 4G LTE speeds which helps better support the increasing numbers of mobile Internet users.

The most common job titles posted online requiring mobile development expertise were software engineers, web developers, Java developers, project managers, and applications developers. The programming skills most preferred by employers were found to be, in descending order: Java, Android OS, JavaScript, SQL, HTML, CSS, Linux, XML, UNIX, and AJAX. The most common certifications preferred for mobile development positions included: Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), and Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP).

Despite the record-high demand for talent, the talent pool continues to lack in this areas and mobile development jobs are increasingly hard to fill. As reported by Hiring Scale, San Francisco was found to be experiencing the deepest drought of talent with demand far surpassing local talent. Jobs posted in the area are online an average of 7 weeks. In contrast, the markets in Eugene, Oregon, Champaign, Illinois, and Wichita, Kansas have low hiring demand in the mobile development areas, consequently creating a larger supply of talent. Jobs are posted in these locations for an average of only 4.5 weeks; outpacing the national average by over 2 weeks.
