Map to Better Internships Infographic section Creating a great internship program is a journey—all you have to do is map out your options. At least that’s what the folks at InternMatch, an online platform connecting the best intern candidates and employers, say.

The company has created an infographic, “The Map to Better Internships,” detailing how businesses can map out their “paths” to successful internship programs.

So, what’s the first destination on the road to internship program success? Location.

The infographic lists the top states for finding college talent:

  • California
  • Texas
  • Georgia
  • Florida
  • Illinois
  • Pennsylvania
  • Ohio
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Massachusetts

It also lists the top seven cities for internship opportunities:

  • New York City
  • San Francisco
  • Los Angeles
  • Washington DC
  • Chicago
  • San Diego
  • Boston

The second step on the road to a great internship program? Perks.

All interns want perks, but the key is to finding out what types.

The infographic lists the top perks for attracting talent:

  • Receiving food (7.9%)
  • Working in a pet-friendly office (1.3%)
  • Work with key leaders by having access to executives and mentorship (47.3%)
  • Flexible hours (43.6%)

It also explains a few things intern really want, such as better pay (37.8%), the chance to do work (30.2 %), and company culture activities (13.2%), to name a few.

The third step in this journey is understanding who interns are. Backgrounds of interns include:

  • 70 percent are women, 30 percent are men
  • 80 percent are 25 or younger
  • 67 percent are Caucasian

And the final step on this journey is for companies to locate the top industries for internships:

  • Media
  • Social Media
  • Research
  • Marketing
  • Software
