5 Statistics That Prove Women Are Impacting Business at Unprecedented Levels [Infographic]

Women are shaking up the status quo and bringing more diversity to the corporate world. As leading ladies at larger corporations and startup pioneers, women are making professional strides at work. From founding businesses at 1.5 times the national average to pursuing higher education in record numbers, many women are proving to be confident risk takers and champions for the advancement of women everywhere.

That being said, more must be done to encourage women to take on more responsibility in the workplace. As Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, says, “We need women at all levels, including the top, to change the dynamic, reshape the conversation, to make sure women’s voices are heard and heeded, not overlooked and ignored.”

To help fuel the conversation around the power of women at work, here are five statistics from MBA@UNC’s “Women @ Work” infographic that prove women are impacting business at unprecedented levels.

1. Companies with more equalized gender distributions have 30 percent better IPOs than companies with less equalized gender distributions.
2. 187 million women worldwide are currently starting or running business enterprises.
3. Women owned 7.8 million businesses in 2007 — up 20.1 percent from 2002.
4. Women-operated, venture-backed companies have 12 percent higher revenues than male-owned tech companies.
5. 40 percent of large public companies worldwide have no women on their boards of directors. However, S&P 500 companies ranked in the top 10 by Governance Metrics International (GMI) have about 22 percent women on their boards.
