The United States isn’t the only 0ne with unemployment problems.  One might look in many directions to see the effects of the economy on workers, but one might do well to focus northward for a moment.

In January, 1,449,600 Canadians were unemployed.  These numbers are much higher than as recently as October.   The 6.1% unemployment in October grew to 7.8% this January – an unacceptable jump by any standard.

Like in the United States, citizens are calling on aid from the government.

According to Ken Georgetti, President of the Canadian Labour Congress, “The federal government must use its March budget to put jobs first and allow unemployed Canadians to get back to work.”

Georgetti urges the Canadian government to allot its money to create jobs.

“Our economy isn’t working for millions of Canadians,” Georgetti says. “Unemployment remains much higher than it was before the recession, and many workers can only find part-time, temporary and low paying jobs. The government has to pursue policies that will help to create good and sustainable jobs and not the kind of precarious employment that we have been seeing.”

Georgetti urges the government to improve services such as child and elder care.  He also pushes the government to invest in public infrastructure.  He says, “These investments will create many more jobs for each dollar spent than corporate tax cuts will ever create.”

What can recruiters learn from Georgetti’s problem solving?  They may wish to create their own vision for changing the economy or see if there are any outstanding proposals that they can support with their voice and time.
