Oddly enough, the foosball table has become the symbol of what we might call the “employee perks movement.” Spearheaded in large part by tech companies — both established giants like Google and the nimble startups following in its wake have placed heavy emphasis on perks in recent years — the movement seeks to solve the employee engagement crisis by giving workers everything from on-campus gyms to free housecleaning services.

And while employee perks can have real benefits — they help companies attract and retain top talent, thereby boosting the bottom line and keeping productivity levels high — not all perks are created equal.
