research on increasing employee engagement iCIMS, Inc., a leading provider of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) talent acquisition software solutions, has announced a new research eBook, Increase Employee Engagement & Retention, focused on how businesses can create an onboarding program focused on career development and mentoring.

Key highlights from the research eBook include:

  • More than half of employees say a mentor would be helpful in developing their career, yet only 17 percent of employees claim to have a mentor.
  • Companies should establish a mentor program that begins within the new hire onboarding portal, including Q&A’s or video clips featuring current employees at the company who can offer words of wisdom to new hires.
  • Approximately 50 percent of employees prefer to work in a family-like environment that emphasizes mentoring and career development. Most employers describe their company culture as supportive and nurturing.
  • Companies with a team-oriented work environment should leverage it in their employment brand to attract and hire top talent. Showcase a video tour of the office on career sites and highlight corporate programs that reward career development in job descriptions.
  • Employees cite experience in their role and chosen industry as the most important factors when choosing a mentor. Additionally, 68 percent say they found a mentor at a current or former employer, and more than 40 percent of employees look at their manager as a coach or mentor already.
  • Encourage managers to discuss their own career path and industry knowledge as part of the onboarding process to begin to build a foundation for a mentoring relationship.
