Big Fish in a Small Pond, or Small Fish in a Big Pond? - A Second Critical CareerPath Choice

Two of life's biggest career decisions and influences involve ponds. The first is whether to choose a career path that will take you up an advancement ladder or, instead, to a lifelong generally easier-than-a-climb skate on, around and across at least one comfortably flat pond (allowing for jumps from one "steady-state" pond-based career to another equally flat one). This is the choice between "upward" career growth vs. unchanging career equilibrium in a "horizontal" job (or jobs) that doesn't change or evolve much.

What you will learn in this eBook

Pond Size vs. Fish Size

Sometimes, being in a small pond virtually automatically assures you will be a big(ger) fish, while being in a big pond makes that more problematic, or at least less likely (which can be a relief to those who want to be lowprofile employees).

Bigpond organizations will generally have high status, heavy economic clout and gravitas, savvy fullservice HR departments familiar with how to mine the market's labor pool and enforce high hiring standards, huge numbers of competing job applications, administratively multilayered recruiting by several staffers (rather than by a single decisionmaker) and a lower likelihood of being easily dazzled by you (even if only because of the huge job applicant pool they know how to optimally tap into).
