Anesthesiologists administer anesthesia to patients during medical procedures using a variety of techniques. They also monitor and record patient status, type of anesthesia, and amount administered during the procedure. They may coordinate with surgeons regardin anesthetic use during procedures, and are required to consult patient history, examine patients, and order any diagnostic imagery necessary for their job. These professionals may also examine patient condition following procedures in order to determine when patients have recovered or have stabilized sufficiently for transfer out of post-operative and recovery suites. These professionals also provide and maintain life support, and may prepare patients for emergency procedures or position patients on operative tables in comfortable positions which allow for surgeons to have clear access to areas being operated on. A doctoral degree is required for this profession.
