A manager in the communications industry might coordinate operations in a television studio. Operations managers are also needed in the radio, telegraph, and telephone industries. In the transportation industry, managers direct and control the transporting of people or goods by air, highway, railway, water, or pipeline. They might also manage transportation facilities such as airports, harbors, or terminals, or warehouses and storage facilities.

In the utilities industry, managers plan and organize the supply of key services to a community. They direct the skilled workers who connect customers to electricity, gas, water, and steam. Some make sure garbage is picked up and handled correctly or that sewage is treated according to law.

People with the skill to manage one kind of operation often can carry that ability across fields. But as you develop experience in a particular kind of business, you are more likely to move up the ladder of success in the area where you have a background of knowledge, so a bachelor's degree or advanced degree in the field where you hope to become a manager is a good starting point for this rewarding career.

Set operations policies and standards, including determining safety procedures for the handling of dangerous goods.
Recommend or authorize capital expenditures for acquisition of new equipment or property to increase efficiency and services of operations department.
Negotiate and authorize contracts with equipment and materials suppliers, and monitor contract fulfillment.
Promote safe work activities by conducting safety audits, attending company safety meetings, or meeting with individual staff members.
Implement schedule and policy changes.
Conduct employee training sessions on subjects such as hazardous material handling, employee orientation, quality improvement, or computer use.
Prepare management recommendations, such as proposed fee and tariff increases or schedule changes.
Direct procurement processes including equipment research and testing, vendor contracts, or requisitions approval.
Direct activities related to dispatching, routing, or tracking transportation vehicles, such as aircraft or railroad cars.
Direct and coordinate, through subordinates, activities of operations department to obtain use of equipment, facilities, and human resources.
Analyze expenditures and other financial information to develop plans, policies, or budgets for increasing profits or improving services.
