Fast food cooks work in local diners, bars, and restaurants, and in locations operated by national fast food chains. They prepare hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, french fries, friend chicken, deli sandwiches, and other basic menu items. The hours are long. The work is often part-time. They pay is not much above the minimum wage, and there are usually no benefits.

Yet being a fast food cook has a lot to offer those with their eyes on a career in food services. Often field by high school and college students, this front-line position offers observant workers an inside look at what it's like to run a restaurant or food service operation. And that can be excellent preparation for a career as a chef, restaurant manager, or related occupation.

Take food and drink orders and receive payment from customers.

Serve orders to customers at windows, counters, or tables.

Measure ingredients required for specific food items being prepared.

Prepare dough, following recipe.

Mix ingredients, such as pancake or waffle batters.

Schedule activities and equipment use with managers, using information about daily menus to help coordinate cooking times.

Pre-cook items, such as bacon, to prepare them for later use.

Order and take delivery of supplies.

Cook and package batches of food, such as hamburgers or fried chicken, which are prepared to order or kept warm until sold.

Read food order slips or receive verbal instructions as to food required by patron, and prepare and cook food according to instructions.

Clean food preparation areas, cooking surfaces, and utensils.
